Getting Ready for Summer Travel

A friend referred to me once as a professional traveler. It was a joke but also kind of true! I do travel a lot both for work and for fun. In fact, I leave tomorrow for my Antiparos, Greece retreats (still space available May 23-28 if you, too, are dying for some sun).

Even though I love travel more than nearly anything on earth, I also love staying healthy while adventuring. This can be tricky. As a highly sensitive person, I have picked up a lot of hacks over the years which help me to make my travel more seamless, so I don’t need a vacation from my vacation. So read on if you want some tips on how to keep things healthy while on your next adventure..

My fave travel tips and must-pack ideas:

Bring your favorite protein and fat rich snacks for the plane, train or ferry. It always takes longer than you think it will take. It just does. And let’s face it, whatever food or snacks provided taste like garbage and are also full of salt, sugar, preservatives or maybe even allergens for you gluten, dairy or histamine sensitive people out there. Why protein and fat? They are long-lasting energy sources for longer-than-planned transit times. And proteins and fats are far less likely to leave you hangry as they don’t give us the same high spike and then drop of energy as carbs do. My go-to’s are nuts, avocado or gluten free nut breads (like this one) for healthy fats and hardboiled eggs or lentil salad (like this one by PUR that I buy at Basic). Why start the journey feeling like shit if you don’t have to?

Sensitive sleeper? Pack your eye pillow, ear plugs and download my favorite white noise for loud hotel stays. Sleep supplements which help facilitate sleep differs for folks. If you are switching time zones, I bring .5 to 1mg Melatonin supplements. I love this supplement as it combines Magnesium, Melatonin and nervine herbs to support sleep like lemon balm, valerian root and hops. Just have a hard time in a new place? I take Magnesium Glycinate and Gaba.

Food sensitivities? I always check out menus online before I go to make sure my starving self doesn’t order something that will ruin my next day. If you are like me and have a hard time with dairy, gluten or histamine, this company makes good digestive enzymes which will help your body break down the foods it normally has a hard time breaking down. It’s not a silver bullet, but will make it easier to eat like a normal person when on holiday or not feel quite so crappy if there is some cross-contamination goin on.

Summer sun and booze.. They kinda go hand it hand. I normally only drink wine about once a week or 10 days, but more so on holidays cuz it feels sooo nice to dine al fresco with a cool glass of wine. Simple tip.. Every glass of wine or booze comes with an order of water.. or mix them for a schorle if you live in Germany. At a bar but don’t want booze? I love sparkling water, lemon or lime juice and bitters (Angostura is at nearly EVERY bar). It’s in a fancy glass, is super refreshing and feels fancy for outdoor fun.

Stick to a rough daily routines your daily sleep, rising, movement and quiet times. I love the Johnson and Johnson app for 7, 14, 21 and 24 minute workouts for quick and easy movement anywhere. The Peloton app has great HIIT, bootcamps and yoga classes that range from 5-60 minutes. Easy peasy. I bring my kindle so I can always read and wind down before bed.

That’s about all lovelies! I hope I see you soon.. In Munich, Greece, Italy, Thailand, Schloss Elmua or one of the many places I teach at in the coming months. Check out events to see more.
